Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to look at the trash of a jury member's home. Her work left her dissatisfied by journalism and she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from college. In 1999, she founded her own business of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
